South Africa’s long-awaited digital switchover will take place on March 31 when the final analogue signals are finally switched off.

The details were announced by the South African president during a state of the nation address.

Promising assistance for struggling households, Cyril Ramaphosa said sufficient digital coverage had been reached to make the migration possible.

Communications minister Khumbudzo Ntshavhen is also satisfied with the number of available set-top boxes; progress with set-top boxes installations; and progress with the analogue switch-off in various provinces.

Switchover began in March 2021 following a string of missed deadlines.

Last December telecommunications company Telkom won an injunction against the telecommunications regulator Icasa over plans to auction of the freed-up spectrum.
