The public broadcaster in French-speaking Belgium wants to switch off its digital terrestrial broadcasts by the end of the decade.
It addition to DVB-T signals, which it plans to phase out from 2027, FM radio would also go. Norway and Switzerland have already switched off their FM signals in favour of DAB.
The move is part of a new strategic plan adopted by the RTBF Board of Directors.
The aim of the plan is to significantly expand digital transformation, especially on internet-based platforms such as IPTV, streaming, apps and social media. RTBF wants to create new concepts and channels that would be part-funded by the DTT switch-off.
Unlike neighbouring Flanders there are no commercial DTT broadcasters in Wallonia.
