The team of Project Caviar will combine all the solutions in YouTube the platform doesn’t support Dolby technologies. Google is looking for other industry players, including hardware manufacturers and device vendors. The company began its work more than a decade ago: in 2009, it started working in this area to use video codecs On2 as an open source tool, and in the organization, an Open Media consortium responsible for the free AV1 video codec.
Project Caviar says that this isn’t about any other codec: the company is going to use existing technologies to create better image and sound in new HDR and 3D audio formats, such as Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos. While speaking at the meeting, director of Google’s Tom Baker noted that the licensing costs could hurt manufacturers and consumers.

A large part of Dolbys’s revenue comes from the licensing fees of equipment manufacturers. Various reports have said that the restitution for Dolby Vision ranges from $2 to $3; the payout for Dolby Atmos was not disclosed, but for Xbox consoles, they are $15 per console. One set-top box manufacturer with a wholesale price of 50 dollars is paying for Dolby Vision and Dolby Digital for two dollars. Samsung tried to beat the dominance of the paid solution, which developed HDR10 + technology, but the – or licensed alternative to Dolby Vision is already supported by service such as Netflix, Disney + or HBO Max. And thanks to Apple Music, Dolby Atmos became the standard for spatial audio.
As we start, the Alliance for Open Media is developing a free spatial audio solution, which is included in Amazon, Google, Netflix, Meta * and Samsung. It can be called a ‘Impresive Audio Container’, but it can not be able to stand Dolby marketing without support. Thus, Google, through Project Caviar, decided to ensure the alternatives to Vision and Atmos offer more options: wide-ranging sound settings for spatial audio and support for shooting in HDR10 + a wide range of audio formats with the ability to upload photos quickly to YouTube and others.
For Dolby, the emergence of a powerful competitor could have serious financial implications. In 2021, the company’s revenue went from Atmos, Vision and patents for display technologies, but in the future, it wants to earn as much from these solutions as Codecs.
